Electronic Brake Controller

  • What is an Electronic Brake Controller?

An Electronic Brake Controller is a device that is connected inside the tow vehicle (your truck or SUV). When the vehicle's brakes are applied, the device communicates to your trailer the necessary amount to apply the trailer brakes. Most of our trailers are equipped with electric trailer brakes. However, they are not activated unless your tow vehicle is equipped with an Electronic Brake Controller. Check your vehicle's owner manual or call your dealer to determine if your vehicle is equipped.

  • Why is an Electronic Brake Controller required to rent your trailers?

Tennessee Code § 55-9-204 states that any trailer with a gross weight of 3,000 lbs. or more must be equipped with brakes, and those brakes must be able to be applied by the driver of the tow vehicle from the cab.

  • What happens if I arrive to pick up the trailer and I don't have a Brake Controller?

We have plug-and-play Electronic Brake Controllers for rent. These are bluetooth-connected devices that plug into your vehicle's 7-way socket at the rear of your vehicle. You will need to install an app on your smartphone. You can download the app by clicking your phone's app store button below.

  • Where can I get an Electronic Brake Controller installed?

Several mechanics, as well as your dealer, can install an Electronic Brake Controller for you. Give us a call; we can make recommendations. Additionally, you can purchase a DIY wireless unit that utilizes your smartphone. We are a Curt dealer and have these available for purchase at our lot.

Trailering

  • What tips can you give me for towing a trailer?

Ultimately, the renter and authorized driver(s) are responsible for safely towing and loading our trailers. But, if we were to give you tips on how to more easily and safely tow our trailers, these would be the big ones:

    1. Always use a spotter when backing a trailer. Depth is difficult to judge in a side view mirror.
    2. Go slow! Trailers should never be towed more than 65 MPH. More than 95% of damage to our trailers occurs due to excessive speed. Remember: speed kills!
    3. Double check and triple check the coupler every time you park somewhere. Ensure the coupler is still fully seated on the hitch ball and in the latched position with a latch pin. Verify the safety chains are correctly attached to the vehicle. Check the trailer connector to be sure it's fully inserted in the 7-way socket. You never know if someone tampered with your trailer or vehicle while you were away.
    4. Raise the jack! Damage occurs most frequently because the jack was not fully raised before moving. This is a costly mistake. We replace about 30 jacks a year because of this one mistake.
    5. Make wider turns at curves and corners.
    6. Check trailer tire pressure before you tow. Our trailers have tire pressure labels near each tire.

  • What happens if I damage a trailer?

First things first: don't panic! We're not worried about it, so you shouldn't be either. Things happen when trailers are being towed. If damage occurs during your rental, please give us a call right away. Communication is the best policy.

When you return your trailer at the end of your rental, we'll complete a return inspection. We complete this at the end of every rental. We will discuss any damages with you at this time. We take high-resolution photos of each trailer before departure and upon return, so you'll never be held accountable for damage that you were not responsible for.

If damage has occurred, we will allow our insurance adjuster to estimate the amount of damage. That's what insurance is for, right?

If no damage is present on the trailer, we will release the hold on your security deposit which typically takes effect within seven (7) business days. You will not receive a refund, the PENDING charge will simply disappear.

  • Are there restrictions on items I can haul?

Yes. Certain items are restricted. Hazardous materials, including paint, are prohibited. If you have any questions regarding specific items, please contact us for clarification.

  • Do your trailers have tie down points?

Yes. Each trailer has many different tie down points to sufficiently accommodate what you are hauling. If you have a question about a certain trailer's capabilities, please call or text us at (615) 288-5050 and we'll be happy to help.

Transportation

  • What locations do you have?

We currently have one location. We're in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, about 30 minutes east of Nashville. If you need us to come to you, we're happy to do that for an additional fee.

  • Where can I take your trailer?

You can tow our trailers ANYWHERE in the continental United States and Canada. Unlike some trailer rental companies, we don't restrict you to the tri-state area. You're free to go where you need to go.

  • Will you deliver a trailer to my jobsite or location?

Yes. We will deliver our trailers anywhere in the continental United States and Canada for an additional fee.

  • Do I need any special equipment for towing a trailer?

Depending on the length of some of our enclosed cargo trailers, you will need a Weight Distribution/Anti-Sway Hitch to be attached to your vehicle when towing. This is for your safety and the safety of others. These are included in the rental at no additional cost, and they take 30 seconds to install.

Also, Tennessee State law requires an operational Electronic Brake Controller installed on the tow vehicle since our trailers weigh over 1500 lbs. If your vehicle is not equipped, we rent a plug-and-play module that works with your Android or iOS smartphone. You can add this to your reservation and we'll help you set it up when you arrive. If you prefer to have an electronic brake controller installed in your vehicle, we can provide suggestions on where you can get this professionally installed.

  • What size ball mount do I need for your trailers?

If your vehicle is capable of safely towing our equipment: Most of our equipment utilizes a 2 5/16-inch ball mount. However, certain units require a 2-inch ball mount. If you do not own a ball mount or hitch, we rent these to our customers for an additional small fee. We require you to secure our equipment with a trailer coupler lock when not hitched to your vehicle.
